Cluster for Biodefense Metabolism

Scope

The scope of the "Biodefense Metabolism" research cluster includes the metabolic profiling of infection models of virus, bacteria or parasite, or the causative agent and the host bearing tumor.

Overview

  • Investigation of the role of aquaporin 4 (water transport) in brain function and the study of structure and function of aquaporins using molecular dynamic simulation, quantum chemical calculations and molecular biochemical and biochemical methods to elucidate how water molecules pass through the pore of aquaporins. (Prof. Yasui)
  • Screening bioactive metabolites in search of chemotherapeutic agents and producing chemical ligands for metabolism research (Prof. Umezawa)
  • Study of glycolytic and sulfur-containing amino acid metabolism in parasite infections - intestinal protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. (Director Prof Nozaki)
  • Study of membrane transport pathways in the hope of discovering new medicines to treat malaria disease, and analysis of aquaporins and aquaglyceroporins in the malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae (Director Prof Agre).

News

  • G-COE Seminar (26) Date 2009. 6. 4, Thu. 17:00-18:00 Venue, Institute of Integrated Medical Research, 6F Conference room, Speaker, Prof.Tetsuya Terasaki (Distinguished Professor, Tohoku University), Reference Department of Pharmacology
  • A new cell adhesive function of the neurogenic gene Drosophila big brain (bib) was recently reported. Tatsumi K, Tsuji S, Miwa H, Morisaku T, Nuriya M, Orihara M, Kaneko K, Okano H, Yasui M.
